Outline of the First Aid at Work course

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with five or fewer employees and to the self-employed. Detailed information can be found in the Approved Code of Practice and Guidance: First aid at work. The First Aid at Work course complies with the Statutory requirements as laid down in the Health & Safety at Work Act 1981. It is practical, interactive and intensive, providing plenty of opportunity to practice before an externally assessed assessment on the final day.

If you already hold a First Aid at Work certificate that is in date and wish to revalidate it, you can choose to attend a 2 day First Aid at Work Refresher course. This course will refresh your skills and update you with any changes that have taken place since your last training course. The assessment for this course is a written paper and a 3 part practical exam conducted by external assessors.

Core contents:

Key areas of the First Aid at Work course content are covered. This course assumes prior knowledge and understanding and will obviously cover topics at a faster rate than the 4 day First Aid at Work course. If you feel that your skills are very rusty we would strongly recomend that you attend the 4 day First Aid at Work course again. We do operate a discount scheme for people who already hold the First Aid at Work certificate but want to attend the full 4 day course again. We do this as it has been shown to leave people feeling more confident after the course.

You must bring your current in date First Aid at Work certificate on the first morning of the course in order to register.

Outline of the Outdoor First Aid course. Units 1 & 2

The Outdoor First Aid course units 1 & 2 is our most popular course, and concentrates on issues involved with the longer term care of casualties in remote environments. A lot more emphasis is placed on incident management, monitoring casualties and relaying information to Rescue teams. We assume minimal equipment (similar to what is already on your back) and provide plenty of practical scenarios. This 2 or 3 day course* is suitable for, and recognised by the majority of National Governing Bodies such as the MLTUK, BCU, BOF, SMBLA, BCA, BASI etc.

The ITC Outdoor First Aid programme is the ONLY course of its kind to be on the National Qualifications Framework and certificated by a Qualifications and Curriculum Authority Approved Organisation.  This can mean funding is available for educational establishments

*Some Irish Mountain Leader Training qualifications require a 3 day course. Please advise us of this at the time you book your course. A third day can be added to this course to incorporate Emergency Action Planning and improvised rescues as well as more detailed information on injuries and illness. Suitable for those who teach or play on land or sea.

 

It is possible to do Outdoor First Aid Unit 1 as a stand alone 8 hour qualification.  This may be sufficient for some NGB awards.  Check your NGBs requirements here.

The Paediatric Outdoor First Aid course is similar in nature and style to our Outdoor First Aid course with some critical differences.  Forest Schools leaders are required to hold a suitable First Aid Qualification which sits part way between our Outdoor an paediatric courses.  At Adventure First Aid we have been working closely with Forest School Training and our Awarding body ITC First Aid to develop an appropriate qualification that is fit for purpose.

This course is not just an Outdoor First Aid course with some paediatric elements.  It is a bespoke course with the Early Years setting in mind.  It includes a significant proportion of child related issues.  Our main aim is to leave you feeling confident in applying First Aid skills in a rural / off the beaten track context.  Depending on the age of the children you work with, we are able to include baby resuscitation as well if required.

Outline of the Overseas Medical Intervention course Units 1 & 2.

A 30+ hour (4 day) overseas medical intervention course designed to give you more options when you are days away from help. Travelling by foot or vehicle this course is designed with the lay person in mind. The course will be led by Dr Ross Anderson, supported by Health Care Professionals during the invasive skills day.

Unit 1 comprises the first 3 days of the programme and can be completed wihtout having to progress to day 4.  Call us for details.

Course ethos:

This course is designed to enhance your understanding and knowledge and give you plenty of hands on practical experience. No prior knowledge or qualification is necessary as we start with the basics and move towards the techniques and understanding that enable you to make decisions and escalate interventions in the field. Our principle remains “Advanced at the Basics” rather than basic at the advanced. For this reason, all invasive skill sessions will be led by our Doctor or a state registered paramedic to ensure that you follow best practice and have plenty of opportunity to practice and gain confidence in the techniques. By the end of the course you should feel confident in your ability and able to follow best practice guidelines.

Certificated by ITC, an HSE approved organisation and QCA approved awarding body. Valid for 3 years. Invasive skills are certificated seperatly as a course of instruction.

National Qualifications Framework :  ITC Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid (500/7651/6)

Paediatric Incident Management (Y/600/6125)

Two Unit Unit (1) 6 hours or (Units 1 & 2) 12 hour Paediatric First Aid course.  The Paediatric First Aid course is designed for those who might have to identify and manage emergency situations or manage minor everyday occurrences when looking after young children. This accredited qualification meets Ofsted requirements for those working in early years settings and uses the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document.

Course Overview The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises or outings at all times when children are present.

Course Duration Normally 2-days (minimum of 12 hours contact training time for Units 1 & 2)

Course Content

According to EYFS guidance for effective paediatric training:

--- Training is designed for workers caring for children in the absence of their parents

--- The training leading to a certificate or a renewal certificate is a minimum of 12 hours

--- The first aid certificate should be renewed every 3 years

--- Resuscitation and other equipment includes baby and junior models, as appropriate

--- Training covers appropriate contents of a first aid box for babies and children

--- Training should include recording accidents and incidents

The course covers:

--- Planning for first aid emergencies involving babies and children

--- Dealing with emergencies involving babies and children

--- Resuscitating babies and children

By the end of the course students will be able competent in:

--- Recognising and dealing with shock in babies and children

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in babies and children

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in babies and children

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to burns and scalds in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to choking in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to suspected fractures in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in babies and children

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to eye injuries in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to bites and stings in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to the effects of extreme heat and cold in babies and children

--- Responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in babies and children

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of babies and children with chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, sickle cell anaemia and diabetes

--- Recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illness

Paediatric First Aid has a two unit structure of 6 hours per Unit. This course meets OFSTED requirements.  The qualification is split into two units, Unit 1 Emergency Action Paediatric First Aid & Unit 2 Incident Management Paediatric First Aid.

Outline of Automated External Defibrillator course

Electrical Defibrillation is well established as the effective therapy for cardiac arrest. The most important determinant of survival being the time from collapse to delivery of the first shock.

Today the widespread deployment of Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) is considered a realistic strategy for reducing mortality due to heart disease.

Following the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines, Adventure First Aid has developed an Automated External Defibrillators course for those organisations who wish to provide AED cover in their establishment or on their expedition.

The Fred easyport AED is a small AED weighing in at 450g and measuring only 133x126x35mm. It is a suitable AED for carrying on expeditions and has been used on Everest in 2006. For the full Fred Easyport AED specifications click here.  We can provide this model or most others on the market depending on your requirements.  We can also help you place them in a suitable location in your workplace.

Outline of Sports First Aid course

The Sports First Aid course appears on the National Database of Accredited Qualifications (NDAQ) and has a 2 Unit Structure.

Unit 1 Sport First Aid Emergency Action H/501/2760
A 7 Hour course covering systematic life-saving sports first aid. It includes essential knowledge, skills and decisions for all first aiders in this sector, especially addressing the influence of sports activity upon casualty care.

Safe best practice, vital signs, a systematic approach to incident management, unconsciousness, causes and treatment, external bleeding, internal bleeding and shock, resuscitation procedures, including choking & awareness of current regulations.

Unit 2 Sport First Aid Incident Management K/501/2761
With the first module completed, you can go onto module 2, which comprises of managing the statistically common injuries and illnesses in a range of sporting contexts, using safe casualty centred first aid systems. This course also examines issues not commonly covered on most first aid courses, such as return to play decisions.

This certificate completes the minimum first aid requirement to maintain the validity of most sports governing bodies. Like all of our courses, progression to a further level does not mean leaving the basics behind. Progression will leave you feeling more confident in your ability, more practiced in your skills, and better able to manage an incident proactively rather than reactively.
